It turns out, my body was trying to tell me something.
This is the story of how listening to my body changed my voice, my work and the life I was willing to create.
My story
Life was good. I was building my career as a professional singer, going out most evenings and taking myself on little wine dates. Sophisticated? Or was I numbing myself? Looking back, probably both. Underneath it all, one thought kept appearing: ‘Is this all there is? Surely there’s something more.’
At the same time, I kept losing my voice. As a singer, that was a nightmare. Sore throats and laryngitis became so normal that even my friends stopped worrying about catching them. What I couldn’t see then was that I wasn’t listening to myself. I didn’t know my body was speaking, and I didn’t yet have the language to understand it.
Then I discovered Tantra almost by accident, and it changed the course of my life. Far beyond what I had assumed, it became an invitation into presence – first and foremost with myself. I learnt how to slow down, listen to my body, reconnect with pleasure and experience more joy, connection and aliveness in everyday life. I remember thinking, ‘Sorry... what?! Why am I almost 30 and only just discovering this?’
I began the slow process of not numbing myself. I felt what I had been suppressing, even when it was uncomfortable. I left a relationship that had already come to an end. I started paying attention to my desires and hearing my intuition clearly again. And I bloody realised that dreams are not ideas to admire from afar. They are invitations to act.
I wanted to perform in stadiums. I’ve now performed at Wembley Stadium three times. I wanted to sing at beautiful events around the world, and now I do. I wanted to release my own music and create cinematic videos, and with Arts Council funding, I have. Those dreams were not random. They were asking me to move.
As I reconnected with my sensuality, expression and creativity, something unexpected happened: my voice unlocked too. Five years later, I have barely been ill and I haven’t lost it once. I discovered that expression – emotional, creative, artistic and fully embodied – was freedom.
I immersed myself in the work, training in Kundalini Activation and feminine healing modalities so I could support other women to experience it for themselves. I began sharing what I was learning and watched women’s posture change, their eyes brighten and that mischievous little glint appear when they heard what might be possible for them.
That became My Turned-On Life™. I created it because I believe that when a woman learns to know and trust herself, everything changes: the decisions she makes, the standards she holds, the way she loves, the dreams she acts on and, ultimately, the life she creates.
When one woman comes alive, she gives other women permission to do the same. We light the way for one another.
What I believe
Your life is shaped by the relationship you have with yourself.
When you don’t know yourself, it is easy to make decisions from fear, conditioning and self-abandonment. When you do, you can recognise what your body is telling you, understand what brings you alive and choose from self-trust. Those two ways of living create completely different lives.
Self-trust does not come from positive thinking. It comes from knowing yourself deeply – your body, your mind, your pleasure, your rhythm and your dreams.
